Have you ever wondered why you need to water your lawn every day so that the grass can grow? Yes we know that plants need water, but how exactly do they soak up water?
When we drink, we have an opening called a mouth that allows water to travel into our digestive systems so that water can be absorbed into our bodies. With plants, they too have a "digestive system" except it is called a vascular system.
The vascular system contains many cells that together create a complex network of tunnels, tubes, and pipes to allow for nutrients and water to be transported throughout the roots, stem, and leaves. If a plant is 100 ft tall, that would have to be a pretty long tube!!!!
The two main pipes of transport in plants are called the xylem and the phloem. In simple terms, the xylem allows for water transport while the phloem allows for nutrient transport such as sugars and minerals.
In this lab, you will determine how and why you can change the color of certain flowers.
